Ian, please make your argument more tedious next time, this was too thoroughly riveting. You can do better. Thanks.

Your writing suggests you would make a pretty good lawyer. You strip away the bombast to get to the substantive issues. Good analysis!

Apologies if you consider being favorably compared to a lawyer to be a slur. I mean it to be a compliment. Not everyone would see it that way.

My career was as a lawyer for doctors and hospitals. Even so, my client base often held a dim view of my profession. I learned that early on when visiting the home of a doctor-client it became evident that his 7-year-old son thought "dam' lawyer" was one word. (Apocryphal but apt)

It will be interesting to see if Sally Rooney and her UK publisher continue to hold their position with the publication of her next novel. By the way, how did you fact-check your claim that "millions" of Sally Rooney are "shocked" by this situation? First, the "millions." Second, the shock.

If I was the editor of the New Statesman and my culture editor submitted an article as piss-poor as Tanjil Rashid's piece on Sally Rooney, I would consider his position.

Thank you Ian. A brilliant argument.

Yes. Especially re Salman Rushdie. I also think he lost a lot of his talent too (there’s a huge difference between the pre- and post-fatwa books)
